SUBMISSION GUIDELINES: CREATIVE WORKS

Artist Guidelines

At the time the piece was created, the artist must have been an undergraduate student either (a) attending an Oregon college or university or (b) creating art under the mentorship of Oregon faculty or at an Oregon campus. This includes all current students, and graduated students may submit old work completed during their time as an undergraduate.  Artists may submit multiple pieces for consideration, but we ask that no more than 10 pieces are submitted. Creative works are showcased in the journal either as cover art or as an art feature. Only one piece per issue can be utilized as cover art, but we publish multiple art features in every issue.

Creative Work Guidelines

 Style

  • Submissions must consist of a piece of original art, photography, or other creative work
  • Submissions should be provided in .png, .jpg, or .jpeg form, in the highest quality possible
  • The submission of pieces originally created through non-digital means is allowed and encouraged, but to ensure good medium translation, 2-dimensional pieces should be scanned into digital form using UO Libraries’ free scanning services whenever at all possible; 3-dimensional pieces, or 2-dimensional pieces that cannot be scanned, should be photographed clearly with good lighting
  • Each submission should be designated with a brief title, and the corresponding filename should contain that title (e.g., “Dance of the Bumblebee.jpg”)
  • In order to fit on our cover, images must be able to fit, in high resolution, an 8.5″ by 11″ page in portrait orientation

Recommendations

  • Students are encouraged to look at examples of cover art and art features from past OURJ publications before submitting their work for consideration

Required Supplemental Materials

To Include in Body of Email

  • Submissions must be accompanied by a brief artist’s statement; this should include a description of the piece (around 100 words) and why the artist believes it to be representative of the spirit of undergraduate research (this connection can be loose or abstract)
  • Brief author biography (3–4 sentences), written in the third person
  • Designation of art medium (e.g., “Medium: Digital photography, Sony a6400, FE 3.5-5.6/28-70. Edited in Darktable.“)
  • Email (to be published in journal for art-related correspondence)

Send all submissions via email to ourj@uoregon.edu.
